A Ghanaian street food cooking class in Brixton, London

Vibrant, aromatic and full of character, Ghanaian street food is one of West Africa's most exciting food traditions. In this hands-on class, taught by a Ghanaian chef, you'll take a trip to the busy streets of Accra and Kumasi and cook three of Ghana's best-loved street dishes.

You'll build a waakye plate with all the trimmings, fry spiced kelewele until deeply caramelised and grill chichinga until smoky and charred. No experience is needed; every step is demonstrated first.

What you'll learn

  • Cook waakye โ€“ find out how dried sorghum leaves give Ghana's favourite rice and beans their deep colour, then cook them together in one pot.
  • Build a waakye plate โ€“ learn what goes with waakye and how to serve it the Ghanaian way, with gari, shito, boiled egg and talia (spaghetti).
  • Master kelewele โ€“ choose perfectly ripe plantain, coat it in ginger, chilli and spice, then fry it until caramelised outside and tender inside.
  • Grill chichinga โ€“ skewer beef the Ghanaian way, coat it in a fiery spice blend and grill it until smoky and charred.

What you'll eat and drink

  • A welcome drink on arrival.
  • Waakye โ€“ rice and beans with gari, shito, boiled egg and talia (spaghetti).
  • Kelewele โ€“ spiced fried plantain.
  • Chichinga โ€“ grilled spiced beef skewers.
  • Your choice of sobolo (hibiscus, ginger, pineapple) or pusa (tamarind).
  • Water and tea are available throughout the class.

How the class runs

  • All ingredients, equipment and aprons are provided.
  • Easy-to-follow demonstrations come first, then you'll cook at your own station.
  • You'll work in pairs to cook the dishes together.
  • Once everything's cooked, we'll sit down to enjoy your Ghanaian street food feast (or you can pack up a box to take home).
  • You'll receive a digital recipe pack after class so you can cook everything again at home.

Things to know before you book

  • You're welcome to book on your own. We'll pair you with another solo guest on the day.
  • This is a hands-on class, so we can't accommodate spectators or provide a waiting area for friends and family. Everyone attending needs a ticket and takes part in the cooking.
  • This class contains peanuts. All ingredients are prepared in a shared kitchen where other common allergens may be present. Please tell us about any dietary requirements when you book.
  • Looking for a gift? Book two places for ยฃ140, or buy a gift voucher.
